The hard questions

11
Who gave WESCO the authority?

Nobody needs to. WESCO is a voluntary consortium and claims no authority over anyone. Authority over sport in each country belongs to its government and its national bodies. Members join because the network, the standards, the events and the business are worth it. Those who stop seeing value can leave.

WESCO has people where? Doing what?

Present or working in 54 countries. Regional Vice Presidents and continental Leaders represent WESCO in their territories, and you can see them by name on the Leadership page. In ten years WESCO held more than 75 events and more than 15 million people took part or visited. The Our story page lists the milestones.

Is the number of members real?

WESCO has more than 1,122 active members, of many kinds: private companies, government agencies, governments and associations. Only 74 are listed in the directory, the ones closest to sport and sport business. The rest belong to a larger conglomerate across other areas.

Is “consortium” just a name?

No. It is a group of members with a common command and rules. WESCO is registered in Brazil and in China, and its trademark is a registered mixed trademark.

How does WESCO earn money?

Through affiliation fees, partnership and event fees, and commercial projects run by WESCO The Company. WESCO The Institute runs non-profit projects.

Why Beijing?

WESCO’s largest partner, the CECC, is there and hosts the headquarters. Global finals of the World Cyber Arena and the PEGT league also took place in China.

What has WESCO done in Africa?

WESCO has worked with African bodies since 2018. In 2023 the African Confederation of Electronic Sports (ACES) was founded in Casablanca by the union of 41 countries, all WESCO members. WESCO is now building regional Vice Presidents for each part of Africa.

Is WESCO part of the Olympic movement?

No. WESCO is an independent consortium and does not speak for the IOC. In 2018 it endorsed and helped operate the Esports activity at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires with the IOC.

Does WESCO compete with other international bodies?

No. WESCO does not claim to be an official international federation, and it does not dispute the status of any federation. It works with the continental bodies PAMESCO, for the Americas, and ACES, for Africa.

Why are so many members companies and not only federations?

Daniel Cossi is Chairman and CEO. The Leadership page names the Vice Presidents and the continental Leaders, and the Governance page shows the Presidency, the Presidential Council and the committees.
