From a partnership of three countries to a consortium of 54.

WESCO was founded in 2016 by partners in Brazil, China and the Netherlands. The bodies that now lead digital sports in Brazil, the Americas and Africa grew from it, and in Africa WESCO built the governance of Esports country by country, from its 2019 Advisory Board to the African Confederation in 2023.

Milestones

2015

  • The São Paulo state federation is founded.
  • A state recognition bill for Esports is drafted.
  • Daniel Cossi becomes CEO of World Cyber Arena (WCA), a role he holds until 2019.

Lesson: a sport gains legal standing at home first. A state federation and a recognition bill come before any international body.

2016

  • WESCO is founded.
  • CBDEL is founded and PAMESCO is co-founded in the same year.
  • Partnership with the Chinese University Esports League (CUEL), which opens university Esports in China.
  • WESCO endorses World Cyber Arena (WCA) and takes part in its global event every year from 2016 to 2019.
  • WCA runs national contests that feed regional and continental stages; the continental champions meet in a nine-day final in China, in an Olympic-style movement. Daniel Cossi is WCA's CEO from 2015 to 2019.

Lesson: federations only scale when each level has its own body: state, national, continental and global. Universities supply the athletes.

2017

  • Landmark partnership with CECC, WESCO's largest partner.
  • The WESCO office sits inside the CECC headquarters in Beijing to this day.

Lesson: a long partnership with a strong local institution gives a global body a real address, a legal footing and trust.

2018

  • First WESCO Esports Championship and Summit, in Shijiazhuang, China. It returns every year through 2023.
  • WESCO endorses the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires and helps in the operation, working with the International Olympic Committee.
  • It is the first Esports entity to do so.

Lesson: a championship that returns every year becomes an institution. Repetition is what builds trust. An Olympic body only recognizes a partner that already has rules and a track record.

2019

  • Africa Advisory Board appointed.
  • Launch of Changing the People, Changing the World and Ambassadors of Esports. Football captain Cafu becomes a WESCO Esports Ambassador.
  • WESCO sanctions the Esports Regulatory & Expo Congress in Catalonia, Spain, on regulation, legislation and legitimacy, and its guests take part.
  • Partnership with Euncet Business School for the first master's degree in esports business in the world.
  • Partnership with an international federation for women's protection in sport starts the women's program.
  • Last WCA edition with WESCO as endorser.

Lesson: advisors on the ground and public figures open doors that a company alone cannot open.

2020

  • Partnership with Enter Africa, a creative network of young people.
  • It opens digital sports opportunities in 15 African countries.
  • Access to digital sports becomes a youth policy, reaching people through networks they already use.

Lesson: access to digital sports is also a youth policy: it reaches people through networks they already use.

2023

  • ACES, the African Confederation of Electronic Sports, is founded in Casablanca.
  • It unites 41 countries, all of them WESCO members, without exception.
  • WESCO and GES meet in Barcelona.
  • WESCO is present at the AESF Grand Meeting during the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Lesson: a continental confederation is built country by country, with a founding act and a seat.

2024

  • Poly Group and WESCO partner on PEGT, a national league in China.

Lesson: a league needs a partner with venues and reach. PEGT pairs WESCO's governance with Poly Events' scale.

2025

  • PAMESCO elects Daniel Cossi as president.

Lesson: leadership of a continental body is earned by results and elected by peers.

2026

  • A council of Global Vice Presidents leads WESCO in the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia.

Lesson: a global body shares power by region, so each culture is led by someone from it.

Born from WESCO

These three are one example: the work of regulation, legitimation and legislation for Esports and digital sports. WESCO has built many other things beyond this field.

The people who carry it today

Presidents, vice presidents and advisors on four continents. Each one leads a region WESCO studied before entering.
